Micromanagement From a Micromanager

micromanagementMy previous manager suits very well to the term “Micromanager” because he is midget and looks like a gremlin (the bad one, not the cute one). But kidding aside, that term applies to managers who uses micromanagement. So when he manages his people he is always a failure because he frequently apply micromanagement.

To define micromanagement from Wikipedia:

In business management, micromanagement is a management style where a manager closely observes or controls the work of their employees, generally used as a pejorative term. In contrast to giving general instructions on smaller tasks while supervising larger concerns, the micromanager monitors and assesses every step. Micromanagement is instantly recognized by employees, but typically micromanagers never think of themselves as micromanagers.

It is all too common for staff to be faced with micromanagers who will lean over their shoulder every morning to pick apart their daily activities, frequently commenting and criticising. Managing employees in this way leaves them feeling pressured and demotivated, causing them to become less involved in their work and distance themselves from their manager. And in the worst case employees only works for their salary because all the enthusiasm and productivity on their work is gone.

To sum it up, employee morale is something that greatly impacts employee performance that managers must not ignore.
