There is a food fad in Nasugbu, Batangas. It’s called the seaweed chips. It is made by the Rural Improvement Club. It’s a healthy snack because the main ingredient is seaweeds. Kabuhayang Swak na Swak featured this episode on their BIZ101 and demonstrated how to make the seaweed chips. Since the exact measurement of ingredients is not shown, I guess we just have to experiment until we get the exact recipe measurements.
The ingredients are:
Seaweed Puree
All-Purpose Flour
Sweet Potato
Baking Powder
Black pepper
Iodized salt
cooking oil – cholesterol free
Procedure:
Since the Seaweed puree sounds not familiar, according to the Rural Improvement Club President when she was being interviewed, it’s an ordinary dried gulaman bar or gelatin bar soaked in water until it becomes swollen. Then boil it until it becomes tender. Cool the liquid but I think you not should wait for it to harden because you will add the all purpose flour to it. Then add the rest of the ingredients, baking powder, black pepper, iodized salt and potato chips ( I don’t know why potato chips was added. I’ve just heard it). Then mix it until it becomes a dough and pass it through a dough sheeter or dough roller until it becomes very thin. Then slice it to little triangular pieces like that of nachos. Dry them first then deep fry. There you have it! Seaweed Chips!

Hi,
Here in La Union, our technology for the seaweed chips was developed by Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University(DMMMSU). I just attended the training. We don’t use potato chips, just the flour and the dried seaweeds ( local name here sweldo-sweldo).
It really tastes good! DMMMSU offers free training.
We were also trained on making seaweed candy and lomi. I hope all those engaging in this business will prosper because it really adds to the income of our fisherfolks!
hi ms. dianne i am interested with seaweed chips, candy and lomi hope you can share with us the technology on line. we cannot afford to visit your place. hope you can send us an e copy of that technology. by the way im from davao city and we have so many fisherfolks who are into seaweed farming. thanks again
