Kabuhayang Swak na Swak – November 4, 2007

This Sunday, November 4, 2007, Kabuhayang Swak na Swak featured the following episodes:

1. Jerps Parol Maker – KSNS featured a maker of beautiful Christmas lanterns. The business is lucrative specially on Christmas season because those lanterns became a symbol of Christmas to Filipinos. There are many varieties of lanterns or ‘parol’ from plastics, bamboos and capiz shells. The most eye catching of them all are those made with beautifully crafted capiz shells with assorted colored lightings. Like other successful entrepreneurs who were in the right place at the right time, it started when Aling Emily’s husband got a bamboo star lantern frame which he picked up from the street. He decided to make a few and sell it. Since then they continue making parols and now a big seller of different kinds of parol or lanterns.

2. Bel Mondo Italia Corp. ( Maker of Novellino Wines ) – A proudly pinoy maker of wines from grape juice like red wine and white wine. Red wine have health beneficial properties of preventing heart disease because it acts a scavenger in the blood that lowers cholesterols, thins the blood to prevent hypertension and relaxes the blood vessels. There are studies regarding the French who eats a lot of fatty foods and drinks a lot of red wine but have the lowest incidence of heart disease. According to the owner/founder Mr. Vicente Quimbo the major difference from the rest of the red and white wines is the distinctive sweet taste because Filipinos have sweet tooth. It also now exported to other countries like Italy, Australia and California USA.

3. J & S Billard Cue Sticks Maker – Maybe because of the Billiard champions like Efren Bata Reyes Jr. and the rest that made cue stick making a lucrative business. The most notable one is in Pampangga that also exports billiard cue sticks. The craftsmanship looks superb and also order a custom made artwork designs like scorpions and snakes which is a best seller to foreigners. Prices range from php10,000 to php15,000 a piece.

4. ARC Mam Goring (Maker of Dalandan Juice Concentrate) – with the help of DAR ( Dept. of Agrarian Reform ) a cooperative in Soccorro, Oriental Mindoro was helped in processing dalandan into juice concentrate. They started making it in 2003.

5. Ontract (Tarpaulin Making Business) – the owners Jun and July Rodriguez ( where is August? I don’t know) are the only team and couple in this business. They don”t have employees to help them run the tarpaulin making business. Setting up this business requires a large investment because of the plotter or printer you have to use in making tarpaulins. Other machine required are only a desktop computer and a scanner which can be affordable. Before, only CAD (Computer Aided Design) users use plotters to print large Architectural plans but since advertising through tarpaulins becomes a hit then graphic designers now uses plotters to print advertising materials through tarpaulins. The couple said that even though the price of the plotter is expensive, the return of investment is quick.

6. Walastik! Pilipinas – Owned by a pinay celebrity who first appear in a Mac Donalds commercial as Karen with her Lolo. Her name is Karen Delos Reyes who now runs a business in photography. For now, their price package starts from Php1,500/layout to Php10,000/3 layout.
