Upgraded My Blog to Wordpres 2.7

by Lito on December 31, 2008

Just yesterday I upgraded this blog to Wordpress 2.7. I was hesitant at first because I was too busy and thought that it is not urgent. Anyway I proceeded on upgrading to the latest version. After it was installed, my first impression when I logged into the admin area is there are many changes that took place. One noticeable change is that the menu on top of the Wordpress admin interface was transferred to the left side bar. There are also changes on the dashboard.

I’m glad that all the plugins I installed are compatible. Even the spot milk plugin worked fine so that the interface that I use to like will be retained.

The only disadvantage is that the editor interface (the area where you write your post) seems sluggish. I can’t write fast enough. Hope they will fix the problem on their next release. How about you? are you experiencing the same sluggish behavior of the editor when creating your post?

Will Companies Be Concerned With Security on Job Cuts?

by Lito on December 28, 2008

I don’t know if all companies are very concerned with their secrets being in jeopardy because of terminating employees. Maybe it depends on what position an employee holds in a company.  If an  employee holds some vital information, well the company’s secrets might be jeopardized. It will also depend how harsh the management executes their laying off of employees. Making a wrong decision is a surefire way of harboring grudge and bitter experience of the employee.

I myself have very bad experience regarding this. It happened in a previous company I worked with, a semiconductor bonding tools manufacturer. After the management announced who were going to be retrenched, my ex-manager, who also handles the IT department disabled my access to my company email (Lotus Notes). I can’t logged in to the Windows NT 4.0 network (Yes, they still use Windows NT 4.0 and it’s a multinational company, believe it or not) eventhough I still have one month until the date of effectivity. I didn’t have a chance to say goodbye to my other correspondents to other sites. Maybe they did the right thing. But I’m sure there are other more humane strategies of executing it. Anyway it turns out as blessing in disguise to me. No more wicked boss. No pain no gain! I wouldn’t realize that I can stand on my own if that thing did not happen.

I read post in Orlando Business Journal about the survey of employees if they soon face a layoff. [click to continue...]

Advertising Slogans

by Lito on December 26, 2008

Slogans are, I think, is what makes a Brand more memorable and stays on the consumers mind for quite a while. But creating a slogan is not for the sake of just creating an advertising slogan. It have to be simple and memorable. Relevant to the target and unique to the brand. It should also be a consumer language. It is also said by advertising experts and even theorize that slogans are more important than visual executions because what we hear is what we remember most based on psychological studies. Visual executions change to provide freshness to a campaign, but great taglines endure.

I have used one myself. On this blog you will see the slogan “Work Smarter, Not Harder” although this slogan have been used many times but it seem that no popular brand name have ever used it. Another blog I saw is from Matt Mullenweg with a slogan “Unlucky in Cards”. The slogan sounds mysterious but when I watched a video from Wordcamp Philippines, someone asked why is it so. Matt said, in the U.S., there was a saying “Lucky in Cards, Unlucky in Love” so maybe he made a unique slogan for it. Making it vice-versa.

Iphone Clone

by Lito on December 23, 2008

Who doesn’t want an iphone? if you ask me, I also would love to have one. If you have a spare you can send it over to me so I can also enjoy it. No, I’m just kidding. :) You know there is an iphone I saw that looks like the real thing but it has so many Chinese characters on the screen that I can’t understand. It’s because it is made in China. Chinese iphone clone. I tried to ask one from a sales lady in a local cellphone dealer somewhere in Sta. Lucia Department Store and have a feel of it. The clone iphone is called A88 and maybe the version in my hand is not yet configured to english so I was having a hard time playing with it. I’m not sure if I can tolerate the low quality of china made cell phone because my wife have an experience when she bought a Motorola L6. It looks like the real thing when we bought it but in the long run we discovered that it has a very poor signal, the video recorded and the photos are of very poor quality. The display screen is also not as good as the original.

I saw a video in Youtube of the clone iphone review and it’s kinda funny with some sarcastic remarks. All of the features looks tolerable but the battery life and the signal seems disappointing. I noticed that even there is no sim card installed, the displays shows a full bar signal. It’s like magic isn’t it? Well just see the video after this jump.
