Overseas Workers Welfare Administration 50K Loan for Displaced OFW

OWWA logoThere is good news to all displaced OFWs because OWWA (Overseas Workers Welfare Administration) is willing to lend up to fifty thousand pesos with an amazing low interest of 5% per annum. I wish I could also avail of this but since I’m not an OFW, then it is impossible. Also, there are other requirements and qualifications before you can avail of it. First is they will give you the loan if you were booted out after October 15, 2008 due to factory closures or company downsizing  because maybe it was considered as the start of the global financial crisis. I don’t know if that is the real start of the crisis because as for me, it started in the first quarter of 2008. Also, the other requirement is the borrower must attend free business courses in order for the displaced worker to manage their livelihood projects.

Carmelita Dimson, the OWWA chief had a nice statement regarding this: [click to continue...]

Financial Crisis

Financial CrisisThe financial crisis has brought to us many woes. One very obvious effect was the tsunami of job losses worldwide. In the Philippines alone aside from the job cut of Intel Corp., there are also job cuts on other sectors as well. But did you know that there are also many financial crisis suicide that are happening? I read a news about the German billionaire named Adolf Merckle who was caught in the financial crisis. Merckle was a respected businessmen with a wife and four children, jumped in front of a train in the town of Blaubeuren in southwestern Germany. You can read the details here. Not only in Europe but also in the U.S. and in Japan. And in Japan the suicide rate  is expected to soar. In the U.S. the numbers are mounting.

So what is the cause of this global economic crisis? We all heard in the news that the reason is the drying up of funds from financial institutions. But what is the reason behind it? I can’t tell either but I read a post in moolanomy.com What Caused The Financial Crisis Of 2008 , And on his opinion, it was GREED. One example he gave was on mortgage lenders. Since majority of the people can’t afford mortgage, they are willing to lend money to them because they are able to charge more interest rates and make more money on sub prime loans. If the borrowers  default, they will seize the house and sell it again. That was an easy money isn’t it? The same thing on credit cards. They lend money to borrowers and charge excessive interests and surcharges. And after the borrower can’t pay anymore, they will do everything to squeeze the poor borrower.

Money War

money warThe new Korean Tele-Novela Money War is now becoming popular here in the Philippines and I admit that I’m also an avid watcher.  In Korea the title is different, it is War of Money. Maybe the reason why Korean tele-novela are gaining popularity is the unusual stories happening in them. One very obvious and interesting event is about a loan shark named Bogart (I wonder what’s his Korean name?) who kept five billion won in an office. How in the world can you keep such an amount in your place? From the beginning of the story, I have no idea what is it all about and I don’t watch it that much because I thought it was just another rags to riches story. But as the story goes, it becomes more interesting and the drama is about money war between money lenders.

The main cast who played the role are: (This is on Philippines only, in Korea and other parts of the world where it is shown, the names are different) [click to continue...]

Intel in Philippines: Closure Was Real

intel insideThis is a very sad news on our economy. One if Intel’s plant in Cavite has been there for 35 years and now it will be gone for good by the year end. At least there will be 1800 jobs cuts on the Philippine based plant. Not only on the Philippines but also in Malaysia, California and Oregon will be affected. Since they (Intel) have a manufacturing plant in China, it is evident that the company will transfer all it’s resources there where labor is cheap and the cost of living is very low. As they say, no news is a good news and it’s only January. This is the effect of the current global economic crisis which started early last year.

I fear many companies will affected by this decision specially those businesses like semiconductor wire bonding tools manufacturer. There was a multinational semiconductor wire bonding tools manufacturer I know and was operating here in the Philippines that have a manufacturing plant in China too and I fear that the same thing will happen and might be included to the rest of the 60,000 I.T. jobs that will be affected. Just search the internet for the news about the 60k jobs to know more about the details. And as for the semiconductor company I mentioned, the name of the company starts with the word “small” (no wonder it never grew up). I’ll give you a clue, just type the keyword “small wire bonding tools” on Google or Yahoo! and you will see it.

Markus Frind of Plenty of Fish

markus frindAs I’ve read in blogs and news portal in the  internet, Plenty of Fish is the largest dating site in the world with 1.6 billion pageviews a month. It was run by Markus Frind all by himself without managers or supervisors to assist him. He only have 3 assistants to serve as customer service but I think this can be easily outsourced and still he can do it all by himself. You can read many stories about him and his online dating site and why he became so successful but I just wanted to focus on his not so ordinary thinking of running his dating site. One thing I noticed is how he decides on feed backs made by his members. Many thought that customer feed back is very important in improving our businesses specially in the internet world. But you know Markus have a different approach regarding this. On his interview, I took a quote on Inc.com on the article by Max Chafkin:

Frind has resisted adding other commonly requested features, such as chatrooms and video profiles, on the same grounds. “I don’t listen to the users,” he says. “The people who suggest things are the vocal minority who have stupid ideas that only apply to their little niches.” Instead, Frind has focused his energy on making the site better at matching people. When a member starts browsing through profiles, the site records his or her preferences and then narrows down its 10 million users to a more manageable group of potential mates. “Users never see the whole database,” Frind says. “It gets smaller and more focused on what you’re actually looking for.” In other words, if you tell Plenty of Fish you want to date blond nonsmokers but spend all your time gawking at nicotine-addled brunettes, the program will adjust. “People think they know who the perfect person is, but that’s not always who they really want,” he says. Frind estimates, based on exit surveys, that the site creates 800,000 successful relationships a year.
