Finding a business opportunity is not like treasure hunting where if you find it, you are already rich. In business, finding an opportunity consists of three steps. It’s like a tripod stand of a camera where if one of the legs is missing, the tripod won’t stand up.
So these three steps are: [click to continue...]

I happened to meet a Malaysian businessman in a bookstore a week ago. I was looking for a personal development book when he approached me and talked about a plethora of self-help books which he was able to read for a decade already. His business is into leadership training and he is involved in a distribution business.
Nowadays, it is my habit to add new friends in Facebook as my way of storing contacts. When I visited his Facebook profile, what I saw was: a different name as compared to his real name in the business card, a tiny picture of a car as a Profile picture, a few friend connections, and a few personal information – which for me, does not speak of who I thought he is when he introduce himself to me.

Now that you’ve decided to take the plunge and create an ecommerce website, it’s time to find a few customers. Although some newcomers think that all they need is an attractive website with a good product line, this couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, in the online world, the best products and best prices don’t always equal success. Just like you need to advertise a brick-and-mortar store to persuade customers to walk through your doors, an ecommerce site requires a substantial amount of marketing to draw traffic and make a sale. Compared to other mascots here in the Philippines, Jollibee mascot is probably the most recognized specially to children. And the bombardment of television commercials and endorsements of popular local actors and actresses using catchy lines that every Filipino can immediately grasp.

Creating a website is totally different from creating an effective website. It is easy to think that making a website is just putting it there in cyberspace and people will flock into it. This is I think is a common mistake specially to businesses and companies who makes websites and I have a feeling that up to now many are still alien to the word “WEB 2.0″. So what is Web 2.0 ? Maybe a good definition is from Wikipedia and I quote:
The term Web 2.0 is associated with web applications that facilitate participatory information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design, and collaboration on the World Wide Web. A Web 2.0 site allows users to interact and collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue as creators (prosumers) of user-generated content in a virtual community, in contrast to websites where users (consumers) are limited to the passive viewing of content that was created for them. Examples of Web 2.0 include social networking sites, blogs, wikis, video sharing sites, hosted services, web applications, mashups and folksonomies.

In today’s cloud oriented business world, almost every company needs an online presence. Once that website is up and running, the natural next step is make online sales. If your customer is accustomed to shopping from home and finds the only way to buy from you is to physically come in to the store or place a phone order, they may just move on to your competitor.
In today’s market, that might be someone in another town or even another country. Most of your shoppers may be local, but they are not limited to using local businesses. To stay alive in today’s economy, the smart move is selling online. However, this is almost impossible without the ability to accept credit cards and for that you will need a merchant account.
