Blackberry Curve 9220 Review – Globe 499 Plan

I think my review of this Blackberry curve is a little late because there are lots of it floating around the internet. But regarding the Globe Telecom 499 Blackberry plan review, I only saw one blog mentioning this. Actually I availed of the plan not because I wanted to but it’s because of my daughter’s never ending request to get her a high end cellphone and a free ticket to Nicki Minaj concert party (but I was approved 3 days after the last day of that promo so I didn’t get the free ticket). And one of her choice, and I think this is the one she really likes the most, is the Blackberry mobile phone.  I always tell her to buy a clone, because I was a bit worried that she might loose it if I’ll buy a genuine blackberry. The fact is I can’t afford to buy her the latest model, but thank goodness that Globe has a 499 Blackberry plan. I know that this could be more expensive because if you will buy it cash, the price hovers around 9,800 to 10,000 pesos but if you will compute the monthly payment of the Blackberry plan it will cost not less than 14k pesos.

But if you will think it over, it is more cost effective to avail of the plan if there were no surprise charges that will appear on your monthly bill. Some telecom companies, especially the one I availed many years ago on Sun Cellular, there were charges that I didn’t know where it came from. I was also promised with a refund after I finished the 2 year locked in period but until now the refund never materialized. Anyway back to Globe, although the 499 plan is advertised as is, you will find out that you have to pay an additional 99 pesos on top of the 499 pesos because the 99 pesos is for the unlimited Blackberry chat that you have to avail, and that is compulsory. So actually it is 598 pesos you have to pay a month. A good marketing strategy don’t you think? 499 versus 598, he he he 499 look better and sounds better.

One of the things I like is the speed of the approval, (if ever you will be approved) and the requirements needed. I just submitted an application form, photo copy of my credit card billing statement (latest 2 months billing) and identification card. It was approved within 4 days. There is also a credit limit that I think will protect us from over charging which I saw on the billing statement. I’m not sure if they will really cap the amount to only 700 pesos if ever my daughter used the phone excessively and will shock me when the billing appears. But at least I can monitor the usage online which you can do too by going to Globe website and registering and enrolling your account. No need to wait for the printed copies by mail, you can view and print it right away.

So far, the Blackberry Curve 9220 is the latest model of the curve series and comes with the latest OS version,  the Blackberry OS 7.1 and it is WiFi capable. The only drawback I see is it has no 3G (the 3G version is Curve 9320) and you can’t use facebook and twitter via wifi on PLDT but my daughter told me she can use it on a Globe wifi when she visited her classmate’s house otherwise you have to avail the data plan. The 2MP camera is not very impressive and does not have auto focus. Check the detailed specs below for more details.

One more thing, until now the Blackberry desktop manager I installed in my computer (Vista Ultimate edition) is not running. I searched and tried many suggestion I read in forums and blogs but I still can’t make it run. Maybe someday I will be able to solve that problem. So far this high end mobile phone is slick and very easy to use and internet surfing is a breeze.
